What to do in Madrid in wintertime

1 – Try the “Cocido Madrileño” (Cheakpeas Stew)

We recommend you visiting at least one of the following restaurants in order to get the best full set of dishes of “Cocido Madrileño”: Casa Llardy, La Bola, Cruz Blanca, Malacatín, Casa Pello, Casa Carola, Taberna de la Daniela.

You might also attend la Ruta del cocido madrileño (tour), a cultural and gastronomic experience through some of the most well-known restaurants in the province. You could even join the club de amigos del cocido.

2 – Harry Potter. The Exhibition

Exhibition extended thanks to its big success among teenagers and adults. If you love Harry Potter you have to come and visit the exhibition. Now you have the chance to attend the exhibition in Madrid after European cities such as Brussels and Paris.

Get into and enjoy the fantastic creatures that you find at the Commons Room and Dormitory of Gryffindor, visit the Pociones and Herbología Rooms or the Bosque Prohibido. Get inside campo de Quidditch and thow a Quaffle ball, get  a mandrake out from the Pot or go over the Hagrid´s hut and visit his massive sofa.  Enjoy all these things among many others at the largest pavilion of IFEMA.

3 – Manolo Blahnik Exhibition. El Arte del Zapato (Shoemaker)

If you are a fashion follower, enjoy this unique exhibition about the well-known “Manolos” shoes at the Museo Nacional de las Artes Decorativas. The retrospective includes more than 200 shoes and 80 original sketches from the auteur.  Highly recommendable if you are a super fan of the TV series   “Sex in New York”.

4 – Churros in San Ginés

There are people from outside of Spain that just come to Madrid to enjoy churros with chocolate at San Gines. Are you going to miss it?  It is a perfect break between exhibitions and walks through the center. A must visit of Madrid since 1894! Perfect for Chocolate Lovers 😉

5 – Go to Museums

The Prado Museum is temporarily holding an exhibition about pieces of work of Mariano Fortuny y Marsal. An important range of cubism proposals are exhibited at Reina Sofía Museum. Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum exhibits a Picasso-Lautrec collection where the Malaga artist`s influence over the French painter can be seen until January 21st 2018

 

6 – Skiing in the Madrid Mountains or at Xanadú

If you want to go skiing in Madrid, try Navacerrada Sky Resort only some 50 km away from the Hostal. Madrid Snow Zone is the indoor option to go skiing in the Spanish capital (25 km away aprox.)

7 – Chestnuts on the street

If you want to taste one of the typical winter flavors in Madrid then try some roasted chestnuts. Find one of the stands in the corners in Madrid city center!

8 – Ice Skating

If you enjoy so much ice skating or you just want to do it, you can try at the Palacio de Hielo, where you can do shopping as well.  The ice rink is in Hortaleza neighborhood, and you can get there by metro Canillas.

9 – Expo-Wars. The largest private collection in Spain dedicated to the Star Wars universe.

Immerse yourself in the universe of The Galaxy with the Expo-Wars exhibition. Enjoy a selection of the most significant and spectacular pieces of the famous saga in real size. You will be able, among other things, to take photos on the emperor’s throne and many other things. May the force accompany you in this exhibition that lasts until January 21 at the Wizink Center.

10 – Visiting the new shopping center “Plaza Río 2”

If cold hits and you want to be under cover and see something new in Madrid, we recommend you visit the Plaza Rio 2 center. Enjoy its shops and restaurants and its wonderful views of the Manzanares  river near the old slaughterhouse in Madrid. Highly recommended if you want to enjoy the magnificent views of Madrid from that part of the city.
